ALTOONA-Kelsey Verbeten and Lizi Brooks had never set foot on the Eau Claire Golf and Country Club course prior to this week's Wisconsin Women's State Golf Association Match Play Championships. But apparently their lack of experience didn't bother them.
Verbeten, who will be a senior on the University of Wisconsin golf team next fall, and Brooks each shot the best qualifying round score Monday - Verbeten shot a 73 for the top spot in the Championship Flight, while Brooks shot an 80 to earn medalist recognition in the Juniors competition-and won their championship matches Wednesday on a damp and overcast morning.
"I had a really hard time with the speed on the greens today," said Verbeten, who won her first WWSGA Championship Flight tournament. "I had a bunch of three-putts early on, but I struck the ball pretty well for the most part.
The left-handed Verbeten, who has won the Juniors competition of the Match Play Championships in the past, defeated Katie Tabbert, 4 and 2, in the championship match. Heather Herrick, who also competes for the Badgers, beat Pat Roisum, 5 and 4, in the consolation match of the Championship Flight.
The 16-year-old Brooks, who competes at Waunakee High School, took down Altoona's Gabrielle Curtis, 2 and 1, in the championship match of the Juniors Flight.
